What are age appropriate exercises?
- Age appropriate exercises vary from child to child based on ability to follow instructions, defiance issues, physical ability, mental, emotional and physical development
- For younger children (generally ages 2-4), age appropriate exercises involve mimicking, so any safe activity will be appropriate because the child will naturally mimic at their best ability
- For children ages 5-9, the activities need to be enjoyable and fun.
- For children ages 10-13, more detailed instruction for developing specific movements
- For teens ages 14-17, specific instructions focusing on finer skills, and targeted challenges
- For older children, first assess if they have the basic coordination and the basic skills for each activity
- Any time you have a movement that is new to the child, the first time this new movement is taught to the child, it should be done carefully, cautiously and in a controlled environment, without any time constraints
- It is important not to add any weights to a young child’s exercise routine (balls, jump ropes, etc. are OK)
